Star Wars: The Old Republic Review
What if you were given the choice to play as a Jedi, Sith, Bounty Hunter, or any other class in the Star Wars universe in a massively online multiplayer video game? Star Wars: The Old Republic is a realization of that promise. The MMORPG game first came out in 2012, and still continues to be popular to this day.
If you missed this classic (developed by western RPG maestros Bioware) the first time, you will be pleased to know it is free to play now. You can find it on Steam, and join thousands of players in an immersive online role-playing game.
We review The Old Republic, and whether it is worth visiting in 2021, especially with more polished MMORGs in the market today.
Plot
The Old Republic is what happens when you combine incredible stories, a personal spacecraft, light-saber battles and numerous classes in a cohesive package.
It begins 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, the award-winning RPG that put Bioware on the map. You will have to choose between the Empire or the Republic as you are caught in a massive war.
You have the main story campaign for your ‘class.’ And then the game opens up a world of possibilities with battles and adventures that can be best enjoyed with your friends and clan mates online.
What I like about TOR is that Bioware has included full voice-overs and dialogues, and decision-making mechanics that the studio is famous for. Those decisions end up influencing the storyline.
Gameplay
You choose from eight different classes, maximizing The Old Republic’s replayability factor. Each class has its own storyline, different weapons and skills. The Port Forwarding of Star Wars: The Old Republic is easy too.
Sure, there is still some loot to grind for, but it is the online aspect that makes people come back for more. Plus there is a tremendous amount of content, with the first two expansions free to play. The other three DLCs you will have to pay for.
The game can be played solo, but it is best enjoyed with fellow players who can help taking down that over-leveled boss way easier. If you find your online connection acting wonky, port forward Star Wars The Old Republic to ensure that connections between you and other players stay open.
You will be traveling to new planets and zones to tackle side quests, link up with different vednors and so on. One gripe that I faced was that the side quests tend to be boring. However, the main story makes up for it, even if you are not a Star Wars veteran.
What I don’t like
Star Wars: The Old Republic has a lot going for it. But apart from the boring side quests and lifeless NPCs, there are some teething issues that could hamper your enjoyment of the game.
The transition to a free-to-play model means that players will have to fork out $14.99 a month to get access to XP boosts, raids, rewards, gear, bigger credit capacity and crew skills.
Conclusion
For Star Wars fans, there is plenty to like here. The story and dialogue reminds you of other top-tier Bioware titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The content is enough to keep you occupied for months, if not years. It is also pretty fun to play with a bunch of friends.
